They will lie to their spouse, children, supervisors, the neighbors, but mostly they lie to themselves. They know they have a problem. They understand they have a problem, but they just keep doing it. The light at the end is that gambling addiction can be treated, although there is debate over how effective treatment is. When the alcoholic quits drinking, he picks up the pieces and moves on, but the gambler may be faced with overwhelming debt that he cannot see a way out of when he quits gambling. Don’t despair, many gambling addicts make it through, quit gambling and move on with their lives, but as with any other addiction it can be a life time struggle both for the gambler and the people who love them. In the days of my youth, it was the exception rather than the rule for math teachers to go out of their way create classroom activities that were especially interesting for students – there were some teachers who did this, but many didn’t. Today, however, many more teachers place much great emphasis on engaging students, and thus there is much greater demand for exciting classroom activities and educational games. One such activity that an increasing number of teachers are turning to is bingo.

The reasons for bingo’s increasing popularity are that it’s easy to learn, easily adaptable to many different situations, fun to play, and inexpensive.

The most important difference between normal bingo, and educational variants, is that educational variants are played using specially printed bingo cards instead of the standard numbered bingo cards: In the case of multiplication bingo, you would use bingo cards printed with multiplication problems. One other thing that should be noted, is that the teacher should of course require their students to solve these problems (either individually or as a class activity, depending on the teacher’s preference), rather than just marking them off as they come up!

The one thing that you’re probably still wondering about is where to get these multiplication bingo cards. That’s actually easy – you simply print them from your computer – easy-to-use but affordable bingo card maker software makes it dead easy.

The rules for online bingo are basically the same as what you may be use to in a parlor. All versions of phonics bingo are based on the same general principle: Each child is given a bingo card or worksheet, the teacher or parent reads out words or clues as bingo calls, and the children mark off squares from their cards which correspond to the bingo calls. The winner is the first child to achieve a winning pattern (for example, a straight line of five marked off squares) on their bingo card and call out “bingo!”.

The most basic phonics bingo game is “phonemic awareness bingo”. In this case, the children’s bingo cards are printed with a random selection letters. The teacher calls out words, and children must try to identify the beginning sound of the letter, and find the matching square on their card. For example, if the teacher called out “apple”, the children would look for a bingo square containing the letter “a”.

As students progress, more advanced versions of phonics bingo can be introduced. In these, children have to recognize a word called out by the teacher on their card. Generally you might start with “CVC words” (words consisting of consonant, short vowel, then another consonant), and then gradually progress through more advanced phonics concepts, such as consonant and vowel digraphs, r-controlled vowel words, bossy E words, etc.

One additional variation that can be a lot of fun, and again is good practise for students learning to recognize word sounds, is rhyming bingo. In this version, the teacher calls out a word, and students look for rhymes on their bingo cards. For example, if the teacher called out “bat”, students could match a square which contain “cat”, “hat” or “mat”.
